US Sanctions on Iran Shift Pressure Toward China and India

The United States has started a tougher sanctions campaign against Iran.

Sanctions are rules meant to make it harder for a country to trade and earn money.

The campaign targets businesses, ships, banks, and other groups connected to Iranian oil and commerce.

The United States especially wants to reduce the money Iran gets from selling oil.

China is important because it buys most of Iran’s oil.

If China keeps buying, Iran may continue to receive significant revenue.

India buys much less Iranian oil, but it could still face higher energy and shipping costs.

India also wants to protect its Chabahar connectivity project while avoiding sanctions problems.
