US Expands Anti-Abortion Aid Rule to Include Gender Ideology
The Trump administration is making a big change to a rule called the Mexico City Policy.
This rule was started a long time ago and stops U.S. money from going to groups that support abortions.
Now, they are expanding this rule to also stop money from going to groups that support ideas about gender and diversity.
This means $30 billion in U.S. foreign aid will be affected.
Some people call this rule the 'global gag rule' because they think it silences people who support abortion rights.
The administration says this is to protect their values, but others disagree and think it's unfair.
The Trump administration is expanding the Mexico City Policy to include gender ideology and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
The policy, which blocks U.S. assistance to organizations that promote abortions, will now also apply to groups involved in gender ideology and DEI.
The expansion will affect $30 billion in U.S. foreign assistance and will be implemented on Friday.
The policy has been rescinded by Democratic presidents and reinstated by Republicans since its establishment in 1984.
The administration has also closed government programs related to transgender acceptance and gender-affirming care.
