Telangana High Court Questions Lack of Third Gender Option in Police Recruitment
A transgender woman in Telangana wanted to apply for a job in the police department's forensic unit.
However, the online application form only had options for male and female, which made her feel left out.
She went to the Telangana High Court and said this is not fair because the law says people should be able to choose their own gender.
The court asked the government and the police recruitment board to explain why there isn't a 'third gender' option on the form.
The court is now waiting for their response.
Telangana High Court seeks response from the state government and TSLPRB regarding the absence of a 'third gender' option in the police recruitment portal.
A transgender woman petitioner argued that the exclusion violates the right to self-identification of gender and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019.
The online application portal currently only offers male and female gender options.
The petition was filed in response to a notification issued on November 14, 2025.
The counsel representing the petitioner cited the Supreme Court judgment in NALSA vs. Union of India as a legal basis for the plea.
