Maharashtra Pilgrims Return Safely After Nepal Floods Kill Helpers

Prakash and Pratibha Mane were visiting Mount Kailash with a group of Indian pilgrims.

On their way home, floods and landslides made travel difficult near the Nepal-Tibet border.

At first, the pilgrims did not understand how serious the disaster was.

Later, they learned that people who had helped and welcomed them had died.

The group held prayers for those victims.

Indian officials and the Maharashtra government helped organize the pilgrims’ safe return.

All 43 Indian pilgrims eventually reached home.

The floods destroyed homes, roads, bridges and other buildings.

Authorities said that 1,003 people had died and about 4,000 were still missing.
