Punjab Congress Rejects Praise for Sajjan Kumar Amid Backlash

Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar died at age 80 while serving two life sentences connected to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda described Kumar’s death as a great loss and praised his connection with people.

Several Punjab Congress leaders said those comments did not represent their view of Kumar.

Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said Hooda may have been expressing a personal opinion.

Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi strongly condemned Kumar and said he should never be treated as a role model.

Other Congress leaders also said Kumar had been punished for his actions and could not be considered a leader.

The BJP, AAP, SAD, Sikh groups and victims’ families criticized the tributes.

They said the comments reopened painful memories and asked Congress to explain its official position.
