Mirza Fakhrul Takes Bangladesh Presidency Into Democratic Test

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is the new president of Bangladesh.

He is 78 years old and has had many different jobs in politics, education and government.

He fought in Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War.

He later became a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, or BNP.

During Sheikh Hasina’s rule, he was often arrested and says many legal cases were filed against him.

Fakhrul says elections should decide which parties govern the country.

He has also defended press freedom and opposed simply banning political opponents.

His new job is mostly ceremonial, but he may help set rules for how government institutions behave.

This will be difficult because the BNP now has strong control of the government after the 2024 uprising.
