Delhi Air Quality Turns Severe Amidst Stagnant Weather Conditions
Imagine the air in Delhi is like a room that's gotten very dusty and cannot be cleaned because the windows are closed.
For the first time this season, the air in Delhi has become so polluted that it's now in the 'severe' category.
This means it's hard to breathe, especially for people who already have breathing problems.
Most of the city's air quality stations are showing very high pollution levels.
This happened because the weather is very still, with almost no wind, and there's fog, which is trapping all the tiny dirty particles near the ground.
Some pollution is also coming from farmers burning leftover crops in other areas.
This dirty air is making it uncomfortable for everyone living in Delhi.
Delhi's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 426 on Tuesday, entering the 'severe' category for the first time this season.
Most of the 39 air quality monitoring stations in Delhi recorded AQI levels above 400, indicating widespread severe pollution.
Wazirpur recorded the highest AQI at 462, with several other areas also experiencing severe air quality.
Stagnant weather conditions, near-zero wind speeds, and dense fog are trapping pollutants near the ground, worsening the situation.
Stubble burning contributed approximately 6.6% to Delhi's PM2.5 levels on Tuesday, adding to the local emissions.

Factors Contributing to Air Pollution
Local emissions combined with an increasing contribution from stubble burning (up to 13% of PM2.5 levels) are trapping pollutants near the surface.
Factors Hindering Natural Ventilation
Stagnant weather conditions, near-zero wind speeds, and a layer of dense fog are preventing the dispersion of pollutants, keeping them at ground level.
