Urad Prices Surge Due to Supply Issues
Urad, also known as black matpe, is a type of pulse that is commonly used in Indian cuisine.
Recently, the price of urad has gone up a lot because there isn't enough of it available.
This is happening because the crops in India, Myanmar, and Brazil have not been as good as usual due to bad weather and diseases.
Also, people are buying more urad now, which is making the prices go up even more.
The Indian government has noticed that the average price of urad in the markets has increased by about 20% in the last month.
Farmers in India have also planted less urad this year compared to last year.
All of these things together are making urad more expensive.
Urad prices have surged by 20% in the past month due to tight supplies and increased demand.
Sowing of urad in India is down 6% compared to last year, with 13.51 lakh hectares sown as of July 17.
India's urad production decreased to 21.60 lakh tonne in 2025-26 from 22.42 lakh tonne the previous year.
Prices of urad from Myanmar and Brazil have increased due to lower yields caused by adverse climate conditions.
Urad imports in India during January-May 2026 were lower than the same period last year.
