Supreme Court Rejects Plea for More Assembly Seats in AP, Telangana
The Supreme Court has said no to a request to redraw the lines of voting districts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to add more seats in their assemblies.
Someone argued that not including these states in a similar process done for Jammu and Kashmir was unfair.
However, the court said the constitution only allows these changes after the census done after 2026.
Also, the court explained that states and territories like Jammu and Kashmir are treated differently, so there was no discrimination.
Allowing the request, according to the court, would open the doors for other states to request the same.
Supreme Court dismissed a plea to increase assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The plea argued that excluding these states from the delimitation process, while including Jammu and Kashmir, was unconstitutional.
The court cited Article 170, which mandates delimitation after the first census post-2026.
The court found no discrimination in excluding AP and Telangana from the J&K delimitation, as UTs and states are treated differently.
The court stated that allowing the plea would open the "floodgates" for litigation from other states.
