LIC Shares Rise on Strong Half-Year Results, Analysts Maintain Buy Rating
The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) recently shared its financial results for the first half of the fiscal year, and they looked good!
Their sales, measured by something called APE, went up a bit, and their profit margin on new business, called VNB margin, also increased significantly.
This happened because LIC is selling more types of insurance that don't share profits with customers and are more profitable.
They also saw better margins from individual products and a beneficial change in how interest rates are calculated.
Looking ahead, LIC plans to keep selling popular products and focus on making more profit.
They believe that even with some potential cost increases, they can offset them with more sales and better margins.
One financial analyst firm thinks LIC is a good investment and kept their 'Buy' recommendation with a target price.
They noted that LIC's stock is trading at a good price compared to its value.
However, for the stock to really grow, LIC might need to show even better sales growth in its individual insurance plans or pay out more money to shareholders as dividends.
LIC reported healthy H1FY26 performance with APE at ₹29,030 crore (+3.6% YoY) and VNB margin at 17.6% (+140 bps YoY).
The VNB margin beat expectations due to an increased share of non-par products and higher product-level margins.
The management plans to continue focusing on growing absolute VNB and expects cost impacts to be offset by volume and efficiency gains.
A broker maintained a 'Buy' rating with an unchanged target price of ₹1,100, implying a 0.7x FY27E P/EV.
Analysts suggest LIC needs superior Retail APE growth or higher dividends to attract growth investors, despite trading at a discount to EV.

Profitability and Growth
Positive Aspects
LIC reported a healthy performance in H1FY26, with APE at ₹29,030 crore (+3.6% YoY) and VNB margin at 17.6% (+140 bps YoY), exceeding analyst estimates. A broker maintained a 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹1,100, citing solid GAAP profit and a discount to EV.
Concerns and Key Focus Areas
While profit after tax increased, the Annual Premium Equivalent (APE) was flat year-on-year, and the overall market share saw a slight dip. Analysts suggest that market share stabilization is key for re-rating.
Business Strategy and Market Share
Positive Aspects
The increase in VNB margin was driven by a higher share of non-par products, improved product-level margins, and movement in the yield curve. The company plans to focus on growing absolute VNB by selling products based on customer demand.
Concerns and Key Focus Areas
The company's overall market share has dipped, and analysts highlight that for LIC to attract growth investors or distribute higher dividends, it needs to deliver superior Retail APE growth or a higher dividend payout.
