Delhi Police Denies CJP Protest Permission, Seeks Metro Restrictions
The Cockroach Janta Party planned a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10 about the chief election commissioner.
Delhi Police said no because the request came only three days before the event, while the rules require 10 days’ notice.
Police also said organisers had not followed directions at an earlier protest and that restrictions were in force in New Delhi.
They warned that breaking the restrictions could lead to legal action.
Police asked Delhi Metro to reduce trains and close gates at 57 stations for a time around the planned protest.
A traders’ group also asked for fewer large demonstrations in central Delhi during the busy festive season.
It said disruptions were making it harder for customers to visit markets.
The group said peaceful protest is a democratic right, while proposing a protest area outside central Delhi.
Delhi Police denied permission for the Cockroach Janta Party’s October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s accountability.
Police said the application was received October 7, short of the required 10-day notice, and cited alleged non-compliance with directions during an earlier protest.
Authorities also cited public safety, law and order, traffic management and Section 163 restrictions in New Delhi district.
Police asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to reduce train frequency and close entry and exit gates at 57 stations from 9 p.m. October 9 until conditions normalise on October 10.
The Chamber of Trade and Industry urged limits on large demonstrations during the festive season, citing reported drops in market activity and shopper visits.
