Mumbai: Versova-Bhayander Coastal Road Project Approved
The Versova-Bhayander Coastal Road project in Mumbai has been approved by the court.
The project will connect Mumbai to Mira Bhayander and will affect about 45,675 mangrove trees.
The court has set a condition that the BMC must monitor and report on tree replanting for 10 years.
The plan is to replant three times the number of trees affected and also create 103 hectares of new forests in Chandrapur.
Around 9,000 trees will be cleared for the road.
This is to make sure the environment is taken care of while building the road.
The Versova-Bhayander Coastal Road project has been approved with a 10-year monitoring condition.
The project will impact approximately 45,675 of 60,000 on-site mangroves.
The BMC must file annual updates on compensatory tree plantations.
Triple the number of impacted mangroves (137,025) will be replanted, along with 103 hectares of afforestation in Chandrapur.
Approximately 10 hectares of mangroves, or 9,000 trees, will be cleared for road construction.
