Lawmaker Seeks Research Funding Curbs on More Chinese Institutions
A US lawmaker wants the Defense Department to add more Chinese schools and technology labs to a watch list.
He asked for 58 schools and 62 labs to be added.
The list is called the 1286 list.
The department says working with schools on the list can put US research funding at risk.
One school the lawmaker named is Tsinghua University.
Leaders from Nvidia, Apple and AMD serve on an advisory board at its business school.
The department said in August that it would investigate 30 US schools for possible collaboration with listed institutions.
Some of the proposed additions work in semiconductors, AI and quantum computing.
Representative John Moolenaar asked the Defense Department to add 58 Chinese schools and 62 technology labs to its 1286 list.
The proposed additions include Tsinghua University, whose business school has advisory-board ties to executives from Nvidia, Apple and Advanced Micro Devices.
The Defense Department bars research funding to entities working with listed Chinese universities and describes such collaboration as a compliance risk.
In August, the department said it would investigate 30 US schools over possible collaboration with institutions on the list.
Several of the schools and labs proposed for addition focus on semiconductors, artificial intelligence and quantum computing, according to Moolenaar’s letter.
