Ceuta Border Crisis: 50,000 Migrants, 34 Dead
Ceuta is a small Spanish town on the coast of Africa, next to Morocco.
In late July, a huge number of people from Morocco tried to cross into Ceuta by boat.
Many of them drowned while trying to swim past a breakwater.
The Spanish government said this was a serious attack on its borders.
The Spanish leader, Pedro Sanchez, went to Ceuta to see what was happening and promised to put more guards and barriers in place.
Some of the people who crossed have already gone back to Morocco.
The crisis made other European countries upset, and even the United States president talked about it.
Spain is working with Morocco to send the people back and stop human traffickers.
The situation is still very tense and dangerous.
Tens of thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta in 24‑48 hours, with estimates ranging from 50,000 to 60,000.
At least 34 migrants died, mostly drowning while attempting to swim around the El Tarajal breakwater.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited Ceuta, condemned the breach as a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity, and announced new security measures including sea barriers.
The crisis triggered diplomatic tensions, with EU leaders condemning the incident, Italy calling for Schengen suspension, and the US President Trump warning of future crises.
About half of the migrants have already returned to Morocco, while Spain is accelerating repatriation and intensifying cooperation with Moroccan authorities.
