Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Marks 11 Years
The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) campaign is an initiative by the Indian government to support and empower girl children.
Launched 11 years ago, it aims to stop female foeticide and encourage families to educate and value their daughters.
The campaign has led to more girls being born, higher enrollment in schools, and better healthcare for mothers and babies.
It has also helped change people's minds about the importance of girls in society.
The government has set up savings schemes like the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana to help families save money for their daughters' future.
The campaign has been successful in many states, especially those where the number of girls was very low.
It has also led to more women joining the workforce.
The BBBP campaign shows that with consistent effort, positive change can happen.
The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) campaign was launched on 22nd January 2015 to address the decline of the child sex ratio and promote the protection and education of girl children.
The campaign operates as a tri-ministerial initiative involving the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Education.
BBBP has significantly contributed to increasing the national sex ratio at birth from 918 girls per 1,000 boys in 2014-15 to 930 in 2023-24 and boosting girls' enrollment in secondary education from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 78% in 2023-24.
The campaign has led to a dramatic increase in institutional deliveries, from 61-87% in 2014-15 to 94-97.3% by 2019-2020, and has been integrated with other programs like Mission Shakti to improve women's safety and empowerment.
BBBP has been successful in states like Haryana, where the sex ratio at birth improved from 871-876 in 2014-15 to 923 in 2025, and has led to the registration of over 1,375 FIRs under the PNDT and MTP Acts.
