Used Car Ownership Transfer: A 5-Step Process for Buyers and Sellers
When you buy or sell a used car, it's super important to officially change who the car belongs to in the government's records.
Just signing a paper between you and the buyer or seller isn't enough.
Both people need to get special forms, like Form 29 and Form 30, from the car office (RTO).
The seller has to give the original car papers, like the registration card and insurance, to the buyer.
The buyer needs to show their ID and pay some fees and maybe any old fines the car had.
Then, you both take all these papers to the RTO.
The RTO checks everything and then makes a new paper showing the new owner's name.
If you don't do this official change, the old owner might still be blamed if something happens with the car, and the new owner might get fined.
Both buyer and seller must jointly complete the car ownership transfer process.
Sellers need to provide the original registration certificate (RC), insurance, and PUCC, along with their ID and address proof.
Buyers need to provide their ID and address proof, fill out forms, and pay transfer fees and any outstanding taxes or challans.
Necessary forms (Form 29 and 30) and potentially an NOC (if transferring to another state or for loan clearance) must be obtained and submitted.
The ownership transfer application must be submitted to the buyer's RTO within the specified timeframe, typically 30 days, to avoid penalties.
