Study Links Weight Loss Drugs To Genetic Hair Loss Risk

Scientists studied whether a body signal connected to some weight-loss medicines might also be linked to hair loss.

They looked at genes in men that affect GLP-1 receptors.

Men with certain versions of these genes were 7% more likely to have male-pattern hair loss.

The researchers checked other factors, including high blood pressure, insulin resistance and testosterone levels.

The link remained after those factors were considered.

This does not prove that medicines such as Ozempic directly cause permanent hair loss.

Some people lose hair after taking these medicines, possibly during rapid weight loss.

Hair growth may return after a person’s weight becomes stable.

More research is needed to understand the connection and see whether it affects women.
