Saharanpur Mosque Demolition Draws Legal and Political Challenge

Saharanpur Mosque Demolition Draws Legal and Political Challenge

A mosque at the Saharanpur District Magistrate’s office complex was demolished after courts upheld an administrative order.

Officials said it had been built illegally on government land.

They also ordered compensation of about Rs 6.41 crore.

MP Iqra Hasan criticised the demolition and said people were not given enough time to ask the High Court for help.

She also alleged that some important people were kept under house arrest.

Hasan said the action harmed democracy and the rule of law.

Congress MP Imran Masood also criticised the demolition and said the mosque existed before 1911.

Authorities increased security and monitored social media to prevent rumours and unrest.
