Google Tightens Android App Installation Rules, With India Expected Next
Google is changing how some apps can be installed on Android phones.
App makers will need to prove who they are to Google.
The rule applies whether people get apps from Google Play or another app store.
It is already in place in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.
Google plans to bring it to more countries in 2027, including India.
People can still install apps from developers who have not been verified, but they will need to complete extra steps and wait 24 hours.
Google says the wait could help stop scammers from rushing people into installing dangerous apps.
Some critics say the rules give Google too much control over what people can install.
Installing apps through a computer with Android Debug Bridge is not affected.
Google’s new rules require developers to verify their identity before their apps can be installed on certified Android phones.
The rules took effect September 30 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, with a worldwide rollout planned for 2027.
They apply to apps from Google Play and other app stores on certified phones running Android 7 or later.
Installing apps from unverified developers will require extra steps, including identity confirmation and a 24-hour wait; ADB installs are unaffected.
Google says the change aims to disrupt scams involving harmful APK files, while critics say it gives Google more control over Android.
