Parliament Session Delay Fuels Speculation Over Delimitation Bill

Parliament Session Delay Fuels Speculation Over Delimitation Bill

India’s Parliament stopped meeting on August 13, but its session had not been officially closed 10 days later.

Officially closing a session is called prorogation.

This usually happens a few days after the Houses stop meeting.

The delay led Congress to question what the government might do next.

Reports said the government could bring a law connected to women’s reserved seats and redrawing parliamentary seats.

Southern states worry that population-based changes could reduce their share of seats.

One reported idea is to increase the number of seats in every state and Union territory by 50 percent.

Congress wants the existing 543 seats and their state distribution kept unchanged for 25 years.
