UPI QR Codes Double to 67.8 Crore, Driving Massive Growth in Digital Payments
Imagine everyone in India has a special phone code called a QR code.
These codes are used to pay for things using a system called UPI.
In just 18 months, the number of these codes has grown so much that it’s now more than double what it was before!
People are using these codes to buy everything from snacks at the corner store to paying for their food deliveries.
Because so many small purchases are being made, the average amount of money spent each time has gone down a bit.
But this means even more people and small shops are using this easy way to pay.
This huge number of QR codes means India is using digital money more than ever before, making everyday shopping very different from how it used to be.
UPI QR codes have surged to 67.8 crore, more than doubling in the last 18 months.
Total transaction value for UPI in the first half of 2025 reached ₹143.3 lakh crore, a 23% year-on-year increase.
Transaction volumes grew 35% year-on-year to 10636 crore in the first half of 2025.
The average ticket size decreased from ₹1478 in H1 2024 to ₹1348 in H1 2025 due to increased small spends at local shops and service providers.
Micro-merchants and government initiatives have been key drivers in the widespread adoption of QR codes, making them the default payment mode for many.
