Godavari River Flow Hits 70-Year Low
The Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh, India, is experiencing its lowest water flow in 70 years due to the super El Nino phenomenon.
Normally, the river flows between 1 lakh and 2 lakh cusecs in July, but this year it has dropped to just 15,000 to 20,000 cusecs.
This has led to a 49% rainfall deficit in the state, affecting irrigation in the Godavari Delta region where 10.17 lakh acres of land are cultivated.
The government is sourcing water from the Sileru River to meet irrigation needs, but farther regions still face challenges due to the lack of rainwater.
Maintenance works are being carried out to remove blockages and supply water to these areas.
Despite these efforts, elevated areas in the delta may not receive water, but the remaining 90% of fields will be provided with water for the Kharif season.
