Meta Open-Sources Muse Glimmer AI Model, Zuckerberg Urges Open AI

Meta made a new computer program called Muse Glimmer that people can download and run on their own computers.

It is a smart helper that can do tasks like organizing files and managing schedules.

Most very smart computer programs need giant machines, but Muse Glimmer is small enough to work with just one graphics card.

Meta is giving it away for free, although users pay for the electricity and computing power it uses.

Mark Zuckerberg, the boss of Meta, also wrote a very long essay saying that powerful AI should be shared with everyone.

Some other companies, like OpenAI and Anthropic, think such smart programs should be kept under tight control to keep people safe.

There is now a big argument in Washington and Silicon Valley about whether free AI models from China are a problem.

The US government is not testing open-weight models for now, though companies may voluntarily submit them for review 30 days before release.

Meta also plans to set up a one billion dollar fund to help American communities that host its data centers.

Meta hopes its free AI models will be the best in the world, so everyone can use them.
