US Maintains Duty-Free Status for Indian Electronics, Pharma
The US is allowing certain electronics and pharmaceuticals from India to be imported without extra taxes, even though there's a new 25% tax on some other products.
This means that phones and laptops made in India can still be sold in the US without extra costs for now.
This is happening because the US is checking if these imports could be a threat to the country.
India is also exporting pharmaceuticals, like medicine, to the US without the extra tax.
As a result, India is a leading exporter of smartphones to the US.
The US continues to import smartphones, laptops, and other electronics from India duty-free, despite a 25% tariff on other goods.
The exemption also applies to similar imports from Vietnam, Taiwan, and China (excluding the fentanyl duty).
Pharmaceuticals from India are also exempt from the 25% tariff.
This is due to an ongoing Section 232 investigation on national security.
India became the largest exporter of smartphones to the US, after China and Vietnam, accounting for 44% of all US imports in the segment.
