Speaker Tomar Apologises To Kushwaha Community For 'Loyalty' Remark
A very important leader in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh said something that upset many people.
His name is Narendra Singh Tomar, and he is the Speaker of the state's assembly, kind of like the head of the state's law-making house.
At a meeting in a town called Morena, he said his political party, the BJP, always helped the Kushwaha community.
But he also said people from the community sometimes gave their support to different groups, and that made them lose trust.
A video of his speech spread quickly on the internet, and many members of the Kushwaha community became angry.
They started to protest and said they did not need any certificate of loyalty from the BJP.
Tomar then wrote a letter to say sorry to the community.
In the letter, he said he respects the Kushwaha community and could never dream of insulting them.
He took back his words and said he was sorry if he hurt anyone.
The apology matters because many people of the community live in the Gwalior-Chambal region, and the BJP did not want to lose their support.
Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar tendered a written apology to the Kushwaha Samaj on Wednesday.
The apology followed protests after a viral video of his remarks at a function in Morena questioning the community's loyalty.
Tomar had said the BJP always worked for the Kushwaha Samaj but that community members 'moved here and there,' leading to a loss of credibility.
In his letter, Tomar said he has cordial relations with the community, cannot dream of insulting them, and takes his statement back.
The Kushwaha community said it did not need any certificate from the BJP, and the statement could damage the BJP in the Gwalior-Chambal region.
