Koch-Rajbongshi groups suspend rail blockade after Centre’s assurance
Some groups in Kokrajhar, led by the Koch-Rajbongshi community, were blocking train tracks to protest.
They want the government to give them special status as a tribe, create a new state called Kamatapur, and recognize their language.
The government promised to talk to them within a week, so the groups stopped blocking the tracks for now.
If the government doesn't keep its promise, the protests might start again and could be even bigger.
This isn't the first time they've protested for these things; they've been asking for these changes for a long time.
Koch-Rajbongshi groups suspended a rail blockade in Kokrajhar after the government promised talks within a week.
The blockade was led by several organizations, including the Kamatapur State Demand Council and the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union.
Core demands include Scheduled Tribe status, a separate Kamatapur state, recognition of the Kamatapuri language, and a peace agreement with the KLO and KLO (KN).
Leaders warned that if the government does not honor the assurance of talks, the agitation will resume and could intensify.
The Koch-Rajbongshi community has been protesting for these demands for a long time, with previous demonstrations held in November.
