Kolkata Sees Sharp Drop in Road Deaths
The number of people dying in road accidents in Kolkata has gone down a lot.
Last year, 191 people died, but this year, it dropped to 154.
This is the lowest number in any big city.
The police say this happened because of a program called 'Safe Drive Save Life' that started in 2016.
The program teaches people to follow traffic rules.
Even though fewer people are dying, some people say the roads are still not safe because there aren't enough sidewalks and the police don't always punish rule breakers.
The police chief talked about this at an event where they showed off a new jersey for a half marathon that supports the program.
Road accident fatalities in Kolkata dropped from 191 in 2024 to 154 in 2025, the lowest in any metro city.
The decline is attributed to the 'Safe Drive Save Life' program launched in 2016 by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma highlighted the success of the program in increasing awareness of traffic rules.
Despite the drop in fatalities, concerns remain about lax prosecution and lack of pedestrian infrastructure.
The announcement was made at the launch of the Kolkata Police Safe Drive Save Life Half Marathon jersey.
