100 Stray Dogs Allegedly Poisoned in Telangana
In a village in Telangana, India, about 100 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned to death.
A woman who works to protect animals reported this to the police and filed a complaint against the village leaders.
The police are investigating the incident.
This is not the first time such killings have happened in Telangana.
Since December, around 500 to 1,000 stray dogs have been killed in different villages.
The killings are suspected to be done by village leaders to keep a promise they made to the villagers before elections to deal with the stray dog problem.
100 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned and buried in Abbapur village, Gopalpally mandal, Jagtial district, Telangana.
The incident came to light when dog carcasses were found buried at the village outskirts on February 1, 2024.
Police claim that 500 stray dogs have been killed in such poisoning cases in Telangana in the last few months, although NGOs put this number closer to 1,000.
An FIR was registered against the village Sarpanch and Gram Panchayat Secretary based on a complaint by Preethi Mudavath of Stray Animal Foundation of India (SAFI).
The killings were allegedly ordered by the Sarpanch and the Secretary to address the stray dog menace and fulfill election promises.
