US Stocks Fall as AI Slowdown Concerns and Oil Rise
US stocks lost value on Monday.
Investors were worried that AI companies might need to slow down the development of their most powerful systems.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said this was necessary because advanced AI could create serious safety problems.
Some other technology leaders supported the idea, while President Donald Trump opposed extra restrictions because he wants the United States to stay ahead of China.
Oil prices also rose after an attack disrupted an important Saudi pipeline.
Higher oil prices can make gasoline and other goods more expensive.
This added to worries about inflation.
The interest-rate decision from the Federal Reserve was also approaching.
The 10-year Treasury yield reached about 5%, making borrowing more expensive for households and companies.
The S&P 500 fell 0.6%, while the Nasdaq Composite declined between 0.7% and 0.9% and the Dow dropped 0.3% to 0.4%.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged a deliberate global slowdown in advanced AI development because of safety risks, pressuring AI-linked stocks.
Nvidia and Broadcom fell about 3%, while Advanced Micro Devices and Intel declined 5% and Marvell Technology dropped 6%.
Oil prices rose after an attack put a key Saudi pipeline mostly out of service, with Brent above $108 and West Texas Intermediate above $103 per barrel.
The 10-year US Treasury yield briefly reached 5%, while investors awaited the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting and priced an approximately 88% chance of a rate hike.

AI safety and development speed
Slow Advanced-AI Development
Dario Amodei and other technology figures argued that companies should slow development of the most advanced AI models because of safety risks, including the possibility of highly capable AI systems causing major disruption.
Maintain AI Development Pace
President Donald Trump argued against additional administration checks, saying restrictions could cause the United States to lose its competitive edge over China; he said strong presidential leadership was sufficient as a guardrail.
Effect on markets and investment
Slow Advanced-AI Development
Supporters of a slowdown emphasized safety concerns and the need to understand the consequences of increasingly powerful AI systems before development continues rapidly.
Maintain AI Development Pace
Investors worried that a slower AI buildout could weaken the sector’s growth prospects and affect heavy investment in AI-linked companies.
Interest-rate response to inflation
Slow Advanced-AI Development
Higher interest rates could help contain inflation fueled in part by rising oil prices, according to the traditional rationale described in the reports.
Maintain AI Development Pace
President Donald Trump has been lobbying for lower interest rates rather than a rate increase, while markets were pricing in a high probability of a hike.
