Pune Initiative Aims to Change Perceptions of Spiders
Some people are scared of spiders because they think they are creepy or bring bad luck.
But a group in Pune wants to show everyone that spiders are actually quite cool!
They are having special events this November to teach people about spiders.
They'll explain that spiders are not bugs but a different kind of animal called arachnids.
They are also really important for nature, like catching other little bugs.
The experts want people to see that spiders can be pretty and colorful, like the small jumping spiders, and that their webs are just a part of how they live.
This effort is part of a bigger project to help people notice all the amazing nature that lives in cities, even in their own homes.
A Pune-based organization, Capparis Eco Solutions, is launching an initiative called Nisargotsav to change negative perceptions of spiders.
November is chosen as the theme month for spiders because it is their breeding season.
Events include a free 'Spider Talk' on November 7th and a paid 'Spider Walk' on November 9th in Pune.
The initiative aims to educate the public about spiders' ecological importance, varied hunting styles, and diverse habitats, dispelling myths and fears.
Nisargotsav also encourages people to observe and appreciate urban biodiversity beyond traditional wildlife settings.

Fear and Aversion to Spiders
Positive View of Spiders
Common Perception of Spiders
Fear and Aversion to Spiders
Spiders are often seen as creepy, spooky, and associated with bad omens (e.g., spider webs in houses). Many people, influenced by stories and well-meaning adults, have a fear of them.
Positive View of Spiders
Spiders are described as pretty, cute, and beautiful, with jumping spiders being particularly attractive and colorful. They are not insects but arachnids, a distinct group of organisms.
Role of Spiders in Ecosystems
Fear and Aversion to Spiders
Spider webs are sometimes viewed as dirty and removed by gardeners when pruning trees, indicating a lack of understanding of their role.
Positive View of Spiders
Spiders play an integral part in ecosystems and are present because they need food. Their webs are often found in corners or near lights, not necessarily as a sign of uncleanliness.
