Raja Tea Estate Closes, 921 Workers Jobless
The Raja Tea Estate in Jalpaiguri has closed down, leaving 921 workers without jobs.
The management says they had to close because they were losing money and some workers weren't cooperating.
The workers say the management didn't plant new tea bushes to increase production.
A trade union leader is talking to the workers and the state labour department is going to have a meeting to try to solve the problem.
The management was supposed to pay the workers' wages on Saturday, but the closure was announced before that could happen.
Raja Tea Estate in Jalpaiguri's Malbazar subdivision has suspended operations, leaving 921 workers jobless.
The management cited continuous financial losses and worker non-cooperation as reasons for the closure.
A notice announcing the suspension was posted on the garden's gate on Friday evening.
Workers allege that old tea bushes were uprooted but new saplings were not planted to boost production.
The state labour department will convene a meeting to resolve the issue and facilitate the reopening of the estate.
