Mumbai BMC Implements Stricter Waste Management Bye-Laws With Increased Fines
Mumbai's city government, called the BMC, is making new rules about trash to help keep the city cleaner.
They are raising the fines for people who litter, throw trash in the wrong places, or burn garbage outside.
The old system with Clean-Up Marshals is being stopped.
Now, city engineers will be in charge of giving out these bigger fines.
For example, dumping building trash illegally will cost Rs.
20,000.
Big buildings that make a lot of trash also have to be more careful about separating their waste, or they will also get fined.
The goal is to stop people from making the city messy and to manage the large amount of trash generated every day.
BMC has finalized and will soon implement updated Solid Waste Management (SWM) bye-laws.
New regulations include significantly increased fines for littering, illegal dumping, and waste mismanagement.
The Clean-Up Marshal scheme, in place since 2007, has been officially scrapped.
Junior engineers will be empowered to enforce the stricter penalties, with 246 appointed for the task.
A hefty fine of Rs. 20,000 has been introduced for illegal dumping of construction and demolition waste.
