Journalist Hoihnu Hauzel Documents Manipur’s Conflict and Northeast Stories
Hoihnu Hauzel is a journalist and writer from Manipur.
In 2023, violence broke out in the state, and her family’s home was burned.
Her family had to leave, and she helped get relatives to safety.
She began writing about what was happening, even though it was painful.
Her book tells about the conflict and the people affected by it.
She also wrote poems about the home and belongings her family lost.
Hauzel says it is important for people from conflict zones to record their own stories.
Through her other projects, she also shares stories and culture from Northeast India.
Hoihnu Hauzel says she began documenting Manipur’s violence after her family home was burned and relatives fled.
Her book Stories the Fire Could Not Burn records the conflict, which she says has killed more than 300 people and displaced nearly 60,000.
Hauzel tracked daily reports, verified incidents, spoke with sources and authorities, and helped coordinate her family’s evacuation.
Her poetry collection Requiem for a Home in Manipur reflects on the rooms and belongings tied to the loss of home.
Hauzel says her projects promote Northeast India’s stories, culture, tourism and accounts of resilience often overlooked by mainstream media.
