Jharkhand Clinic Renaming Sparks Political Row
The government in Jharkhand changed the names of clinics previously named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to now be named after Mother Teresa.
The BJP, a rival political party, is angry, claiming this is an attempt to encourage people to convert religions and disrespect the former leader.
The ruling party, however, says this is a tribute to Mother Teresa for her humanitarian work and has nothing to do with religion.
Jharkhand government renamed Atal Mohalla Clinics to Mother Teresa Advance Health Clinics.
The scheme, launched by the previous BJP government, provides free healthcare in urban slums.
BJP criticized the renaming, alleging it promotes religious conversion and disrespects Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
JMM, the ruling party, dismissed the charges as politically motivated and defended the choice of Mother Teresa.
The BJP questioned Mother Teresa's contribution to Jharkhand and accused the government of erasing Vajpayee's name.
