Four-wheelers top wrong-side driving offenders in Delhi
In Delhi, the police have started filing official reports (FIRs) against people driving on the wrong side of the road.
Most of the reports are about cars and taxis, which are the biggest offenders.
The police have caught 154 vehicles doing this in the last 20 days.
The fine for driving on the wrong side is Rs 5,000, but if an FIR is filed, the driver can go to jail for up to 6 months or pay a smaller fine.
The police hope this will make people drive more carefully and reduce accidents.
In 2025, there were over 3 lakh cases of wrong-side driving, which is more than the previous year.
Four-wheelers, including cars and taxis, are the biggest offenders of wrong-side driving in Delhi, with 65 vehicles booked in the last 20 days.
A total of 154 vehicles have been booked under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for wrong-side driving.
The Delhi Police have started filing FIRs against wrong-side driving to reduce reckless driving incidents.
A fine of Rs 5,000 is imposed for wrong-side driving, but an FIR under Section 281 can result in up to 6 months imprisonment or a Rs 1,000 fine.
In 2025, there were 3,05,843 cases of wrong-side driving, with 1,78,448 challans issued and 1,27,395 notices served.
