Delhi Plans Hostels for 10,000 Students After Satya Niketan Collapse
Delhi wants to build homes for 10,000 college students.
The homes would be for boys and girls from colleges and universities across the city.
The plan follows the collapse of a five-storey paying guest building in Satya Niketan.
Seven people, including five students, died in that incident.
Officials say many students struggle to find places that are safe and affordable.
The government will look for land at colleges and may use vacant government land.
Private partners may help build and maintain the hostels.
New online portals will collect student information and details about paying guest buildings.
A committee will also suggest rules to make student housing safer.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced plans to develop hostel facilities for 10,000 students across Delhi.
The hostels would be available to male and female students from any college or university in Delhi.
Construction is underway or proposed at institutions including Ambedkar University Delhi, G.B. Pant Engineering College and Polytechnic, Indira Gandhi Hospital and Medical College, and Delhi Sports University.
The government plans to survey colleges, identify or acquire land, and use public-private partnerships to accelerate construction and maintain facilities.
A committee chaired by Ashish Sood will recommend student-housing policies within 60 days, although reports differ on whether it has 18 or 20 members.
