Madhusudan Meets a Mysterious Revolutionary on Voyage to Germany
Madhusudan is traveling by ship from India to Germany to study law.
At first, he worries because his old shoes have disappeared.
He soon becomes distracted by the sea and the many students on the ship.
His friend Amir tells him that his small savings will buy very little in Germany.
Madhusudan also sees Amir praying with other Muslims on Eid.
This surprises him because Amir usually seems very modern and English in his clothes and speech.
Later, Amir and Madhusudan share an Eid meal with Muslim sailors.
Amir says he is married, but he is not even sure what his wife looks like.
Madhusudan travels by ship to Germany to study law, joining other students bound for Europe.
His missing shoes trouble him less as the voyage exposes him to new people and sights.
Amir explains that Madhusudan’s three rupees will buy little in Germany because of rationing.
On Eid, Madhusudan discovers Amir’s deep religious devotion and joins him for a meal with Muslim lascars.
Amir reveals that he is married but has barely seen his wife, possibly giving him a reason to return home.
