Democratic Party Faces Leftward Shift Over Economic Discontent

Democratic Party Faces Leftward Shift Over Economic Discontent

Some Democratic candidates who call themselves democratic socialists are becoming more popular.

Many younger voters feel that working hard no longer guarantees a home or a comfortable life.

They are worried about expensive housing, healthcare and student debt.

They also feel that their money does not buy as much as it used to.

This does not mean most Americans want to end capitalism.

It may mean they want stronger protections, cheaper services and higher taxes on very wealthy people.

Republicans may use the word “socialism” against these candidates in elections.

The 2026 midterms will show whether left-leaning Democrats can win in places beyond their safest districts.
