Suspected Russian Plague Death Prompts Caution, Not Panic in India

A person who worked in a laboratory in Russia reportedly died after getting pneumonia.

Some reports suggest the person may have had pneumonic plague, but that has not been confirmed.

An Indian medical expert said people in India do not need to panic.

He said health workers should find out what caused the death and check people who were close to the person.

Plague is caused by a germ called Yersinia pestis.

When it affects the lungs, it can make someone very sick quickly and may spread through coughs or sneezes.

Doctors can give preventive antibiotics to some close contacts.

The expert said India should keep watching for unusual infections, but the Russian report does not call for greater concern in India right now.
