Chennai Fishermen Protest Proposed Secretariat-Assembly Complex at Pattinapakkam
Fishermen in Chennai are protesting a plan to build a large government complex near the sea.
They are worried that families could be displaced and fishing areas could be damaged.
They also want continued public access to the shore.
Hundreds of people, including women, joined demonstrations at Srinivasapuram Beach.
Fishermen from 12 hamlets stopped fishing for the day and carried black flags.
The government says the project is still only being studied.
Officials have asked the Public Works Department to prepare a detailed report within three months.
The fishermen want the approval withdrawn and have warned of larger protests.
