Govt Mulls Changes to Unified Pension Scheme Amid Low Uptake
The government introduced a new pension plan called the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) for government employees, which started in April 2025.
However, not many employees signed up, so the deadline was pushed back.
Some members of Parliament asked if the government will make changes to the plan to make it better.
The Finance Minister said there are no plans to expand the scheme to other pension types.
As of July 2025, thousands of claims have been filed, with a large portion processed.
The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) was launched on April 1, 2025, under the National Pension System (NPS).
The UPS hasn't attracted many central government employees, prompting an extension of the subscription deadline.
Parliamentarians inquired about potential UPS modifications to the Finance Ministry.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated no plans exist to extend UPS benefits to other pension schemes.
As of July 20, 2025, 7,253 claims were received, with 4,978 processed.
