Aung San Suu Kyi's 8888 Uprising Legacy Revisited on Anniversary

Many years ago, a country called Myanmar was ruled by soldiers.

A brave leader named General Aung San helped free Myanmar from British rule, and people call him the father of modern Myanmar.

His daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, grew up far away from her country and did not think much about politics.

She studied at universities in India and England and worked at the United Nations.

She lived a quiet life as a writer, teacher, and mother of two boys, married to an English professor.

In 1988, she went back to Myanmar to take care of her sick mother.

But the country she found was very different and angry at its rulers.

The people were getting ready to rise up and ask for a better government.

This big protest became known as the 8888 Uprising.

Today, 38 years later, people still look back at that time as the beginning of her complicated story.
