Factional ZUF Gunfights Kill Two, Injure Six in Manipur
Two rival armed factions of the Zeliangrong United Front fought in parts of Manipur.
The groups are called ZUF-Jenchui and ZUF-Kamson.
Reports later said at least two militants died and six were hurt.
An earlier report gave a smaller number because officials had not yet reached the remote area.
Fighting was reported near Nungtek, Haochong, Oktan and Khumji.
Some of the shooting involved explosives.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Imphal, and five were reported stable.
The groups have a long history of disagreements over influence in Zeliangrong-inhabited areas.
At least two militants were reported killed and six injured in related factional clashes involving ZUF-Jenchui and ZUF-Kamson in Noney district.
An earlier report put the toll at one dead and five injured after fighting near Khumji, while later accounts described additional or related exchanges.
Gunfire and explosions were reported between Nungtek Part II and Haochong, about 5 km northeast of Noney district headquarters.
One clash reportedly followed an earlier confrontation at Oktan village in which ZUF-K chief secretary Dingtiplung Gonmei was killed.
Security forces faced difficulties reaching the remote sites, while injured people were evacuated to hospitals in Imphal and authorities continued monitoring the situation.
