Hyderabad Plans Pay-By-Use Auto Conversion
The government in Hyderabad wants to help auto rickshaw drivers switch from diesel and petrol to electric vehicles.
Right now, it's too expensive for drivers to pay for the conversion upfront.
So, the government is talking to companies that will pay for the conversion and then charge the drivers a small daily fee based on how much electricity they use.
This way, drivers won't have to pay a lot of money at once.
The plan is to start with 25,000 auto rickshaws inside Hyderabad and maybe expand it later.
Out of 65,000 new auto rickshaws allowed in 2025, 20,000 will be electric, 10,000 each will be LPG and CNG, and 25,000 will use traditional fuels.
Hyderabad government proposes a pay-as-you-go model for converting auto rickshaws to electric vehicles.
Phase one targets 25,000 diesel and petrol auto rickshaws within Hyderabad's Outer Ring Road limits.
Companies will bear the conversion cost and recover it through a daily subscription fee based on electricity usage.
The daily subscription fee is expected to be around the average daily fuel spend of auto rickshaw owners.
Out of 65,000 new auto rickshaws allowed in July 2025, 20,000 are allocated for electric variants.
