Tanzania Vice President Resigns Less Than Year Into Office

Tanzania’s vice president, Emmanuel John Nchimbi, is stepping down from his job.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan accepted his resignation.

Nchimbi will officially leave on September 4.

He had been vice president since November last year.

The government did not say why he resigned.

Before becoming vice president, he led the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi party as secretary general.

Some party members criticized him after he spoke in favor of a new constitution.

The government said it will follow constitutional rules to choose another vice president.
