Kolkata Summons 29 Hotels Over Basic Fire Safety Violations

Fire officials inspected hotels in Kolkata and found that some did not have the basic equipment and arrangements needed to prevent fires.

They called 29 hotels to hearings to explain the problems.

Many hotels may be ordered to close if they cannot show that they are fixing the issues.

Officials also gave notices to 29 hotels in other districts.

At least 13 of those district hotels had already been emptied by Friday.

The city is checking many other places where people gather, including restaurants, cafes and bars.

Teams from the city corporation, fire department and CESC will inspect about 4,000 establishments.

Restaurant representatives say most businesses have followed the safety conditions set by the state.

The inspections followed a fire at a hotel in Mechua in April 2025.
