Violence Erupts in Karbi Anglong Over Land Rights
There was a big fight in the hills of Karbi Anglong, Assam, because people are upset about who should own certain lands.
The Karbi people say these lands are very important to them, and they want the government to remove people who they say are living there illegally.
The protests started peacefully with a hunger strike, but things got out of control when people thought the police were hurting the protesters.
The police had to use tear gas and even shoot at the crowd, which led to two people dying.
Shops were burned, and the internet was shut down to stop more trouble.
The government is trying to talk to both sides to solve the problem, but people are still very angry.
The Chief Minister said the court has stopped the evictions, so the government can't do anything right now.
Two protesters were killed and 45 others, including 38 police personnel, were injured in violent clashes in Karbi Anglong over land rights.
Protesters demanded the eviction of alleged illegal settlers from tribal belts, leading to widespread violence and arson.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences, promised support to affected families, and appealed for peace, citing a court stay on evictions.
Internet services were suspended in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong to prevent the spread of rumours and further violence.
