India's Agri Minister: Farmers Must Benefit from Registering Seed Varieties
Imagine farmers are like inventors who create special kinds of seeds.
The government has a program to officially recognize these seeds.
The Agriculture Minister said that it's important for these farmers to actually get rewarded when they register their seeds.
If they don't see any benefits, they might stop creating and registering new kinds of seeds.
He also said that while new, super-productive seeds are good, we also need to take care of the old, traditional seeds that are special and sometimes hard to find.
The government wants to help farmers protect their special seeds and make it easier for them to register them.
They also want to make sure everyone knows about the farmers' rights when they develop new seeds.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasized that farmers must benefit from registering their own seed varieties.
He warned that farmers will lose interest in registering innovative seeds if they don't see tangible benefits.
The minister highlighted the importance of balancing the preservation of traditional seeds with the promotion of new, high-yielding varieties.
Chouhan urged the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPVFRA) to simplify registration processes, increase farmer awareness of their rights, and create a scientific database for indigenous varieties.
The event also celebrated the Silver Jubilee of the PPVFRA Act, 2001, and recognized farmers for their contributions to seed conservation.
