US Senate Passes Russia Sanctions Bill Raising Indian Crude Risk

The United States Senate made a new rule to punish Russia for selling oil and gas.

If the rule becomes law, the American president could add extra costs, called tariffs, of up to 100 percent on goods from countries that buy a lot of Russian energy.

The goal is to take away money Russia earns from oil and gas sales.

India buys a lot of oil from Russia because it often comes with discounts.

In July 2026, more than half of all the oil India bought came from Russia.

Oil expert Sumit Ritolia says the rule probably will not change India's buying right away.

The rule still needs the approval of the House of Representatives before it can take full effect.

One article gives the rule a slightly different name, calling it the Russia and Iran sanctions act.

Russian oil has become a safety net for India when usual supply routes from the Middle East face problems.

If Russian oil suddenly stopped flowing, oil prices worldwide could rise, making oil costlier for India and many other countries.
