Punjab Faces Sand Paradox: Floods Bury Farms While Riverbeds Hold Valued Deposits

Imagine Punjab got flooded, and lots of sand ended up on farmers' fields, making it hard to grow crops.

This sand is cheap and hard to get rid of.

At the same time, the rivers in Punjab have a lot of sand that the government says is worth a lot of money.

But nobody is quite sure how they figured out that price.

The government is trying to clean the sand out of the rivers to make them hold more water.

Meanwhile, farmers are helping each other clear their fields, using tractors and big digging machines.

The sand from the fields isn't very good for building things, so farmers are selling it for very little money.

There are questions about how the government counts the sand and if cleaning the rivers will make the sand farmers have even cheaper.

Floods showed that the state needs better ways to measure things and plan for problems.
